Holding Place
SITE-SPECIFIC DANCE PERFORMANCE // 40 MINUTES // 2012-2015
"a dance punctuated by lifts, sweeping momentum, and Tori Lawrence’s deft division of space."
BECCA WEBER, THINKING DANCE
"Lawrence employed the natural framework provided by the floor to ceiling windows that overlook the museum’s entrance and courtyard... The music of Brooklyn-based Bing and Ruth anchored the dancers as they marched through the space, carving their way through the audience. The effect blurred the line between dancer and spectator, human and sculpture and museum and stage."
KAT RICHTER, THE DANCE JOURNAL
"Tension and curiosity: the work feels meaningful as it unfolds, but never tells. Like a landscape in a Victorian novel, it suggests."
KIRSTEN KASCHOCK, THINKING DANCE
"Holding Place" is a 40-minute piece commissioned by the Barnes Foundation, and made specifically for the Barnes' Light Court. The performance premiered in 2012 and was performed again at the Barnes in 2015.
